Coal: America's Energy Future

The National Coal Council Findings
  • Clean coal technologies are available to turn abundant U.S. coal into multiple energy forms including electricity, natural gas, transportation fuels and hydrogen
  • By 2025, new capital investments in conversion technologies would create:
    • 100 GW in new generation capacity
    • 4 Tcf of coal-to-natural-gas facilities
    • 2.6 million barrels per day of coal-to-liquids refineries
    • U.S. coal consumption would more than double to 2.3 billion tons of coal per year
Growth in U.S. Coal Use Translated Into Enormous Economic Benefits
  • Enacting the vision of greater coal use and conversion into multiple energy forms translates into enormous economic benefits to the U.S.
    • Energy prices would be reduced by nearly 35% from the business-as-usual case.
    • The GDP would be $620 billion higher in 2025.
    • The net present value of the benefit is $3 trillion.
    • Employment would be increased by 1.4 million by 2025.
    • The U.S. would benefit from a rebuilt manufacturing sector.
  • These significant economic benefits are further enhanced by the enormous upside to U.S. energy security.
The National Coal Council recommends that the United States Department of Energy and other key government entities address eight National Priority Findings related to coal-fueled energy and Btu conversion technologies.
